Verifying the on-line identity of customers is a major problem in ecommerce. Digital certificates, and a Public Key Infrastructure provide one technological solution.
Australian government departments and agencies, in particular, are aggressively adopting the technology to verify the identity of those to whom they are providing services on-line and also to secure electronic ldogements of tax and other official electronic documents.
DEWR has played a key role in the development of the Australian Business Number Digitial Signature Certificate (ABN-DSC) and is now rolling-out digital certificates to their Job Network contractors.
Public key technology is not only used to verify identity.
Its encryption provides security as well as authentication services.
The seminar looked at these issues and also looked what benefits services such as Telstra's iTrust can offer to business, and where these developments are taking Australia'new economy.
With the Australian government having just released a new discussion paper on a possible national authentication framework, these seminars were a timely opportunity to meet, hear and learn from leaders in the area.
A full account of the meeting is in the eCommerce Report.
