On Tuesday April 30th our seminar was titled eCommerce: Patenting the Business Process and held in the Sydney offices of Corrs, Chambers, Westgarth from 4.30-6.30pm

Speakers included

  • Lars Koch, supervising patents examiner, IP Australia
  • David MacSmith, managing director, Catuity Ltd
  • Alistair Payne, partner, Corrs, Chambers, Westgarth.

Patenting ecommerce business processes is a reality. And it isn't just giant US firms such Amazon.com with its one-click check-out system, or Priceline.com with reverse auctions, that are getting an advantage from patenting.

More and more Australian firms, of all sizes, are patenting their ecommerce business processes, both to protect their intellectual property, to earn licensing revenues and as a strategic or defensive manoeuvre.

This unique seminar looked at how and why they are doing it. It showed how ecommerce business processes can be patented in Australia today, what benefits the patents offer to business, when they can be used to commercial advantage, and where these developments are taking Australia's new economy.
